Inherited Metabolic Disease (IMD Scotland)
The Inherited Metabolic Diseases Network encompasses children and young people with metabolic disorders and was designated as a national network a year ago. The Network has had a very productive first year. The importance of services for patients with inherited metabolic disease was recognised in the National Delivery Plan for Specialist Children’s Services in Scotland (2008). The plan sets out the need for the Network to become an ‘obligate’ network which will see current services within NHS Boards continuing through succession planning.
The Network has developed eight guidelines for practitioners and plans to develop its web site to facilitate the dissemination and further development of guidelines, standards and patient pathways. The Network is also planning to have a patient and families section within the website which will allow patients to swap recipes and access the latest network news. The network has also undertaken a benchmarking exercise to establish a picture of existing services across Scotland.
