Scottish Genital Anomaly Network (SGAN)
The Scottish Genital Anomalies Network cares for patients who have a disorder of sex development or who are born with an abnormality of the genitalia. Genital anomalies are reported to occur at an approximate rate of about 5 per 1000 births and it is estimated that 1 in 4500 live births may have a genital anomaly so severe that a decision about sex may be impossible at birth.
Treatment and support for patients and parents is delivered by specialist professionals, but management of conditions is often delivered locally to patients. The Network aims to develop care pathways for the more common conditions, provide clinical case discussions and develop a register to develop a picture of demand across the country. In the past year the Network has built on this work by developing patient information leaflets and working towards telemedicine links between Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen to facilitate cross centre working.
