Advanced Heart Failure

The Scottish Advanced Heart Failure Service (SAHFS) was initially designated during 1992 to provide the population of Scotland with a heart transplant service. The service was originally provided from the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde until May 2008 when the heart transplant unit, along with other associated programmes, moved to the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, NHS National Waiting Times Centre.

In addition to Cardiac Transplant activity, approval has been given for the SAHFS to implant Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs) a bridge to transplant. This procedure is only offered when a transplant is not immediately possible and insertion of a VAD has been decided as essential to avoid mortality whilst on the waiting list. This new intervention has allowed the skills within the service to diversify and develop. The further development of the service has been set out in the SGHD Heart Strategy document which was released on the 14th of Feb 2011.
