Complex Airways Management in Children

Children (predominantly neonates and infants) with conditions causing obstruction of the major airways are few in number but challenging to assess and treat. National designation provides a comprehensive service for the management of complex paediatric airways disorders and covers major resectional and reconstructive surgery.

The service is provided by the Department of Paediatric Otolaryngology at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow and has seen 8 operative procedures performed during 2007/08.

This type of surgery requires paediatric and neonatal intensive care back-up, and facilities for cardiopulmonary bypass and extra-corporeal life support are also occasionally required. Anaesthesia for airways surgery is also technically challenging, and many of the children treated by the service have significant associated anomalies.
