Extra-corporeal life support (ECLS)

The extra corporeal life support (ECLS) service is based in Glasgow’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children. Yorkhill Hospital is only one of 4 hospitals that provide this service for children across the UK. The other hospitals are in Leicester, Newcastle and Great Ormond Street Hospital, London.

This service provides temporary life support to children and neonates with cardiac or pulmonary failure and plays a key role in supporting the national cardiac surgery programme. It is a very specialised service; reflecting the small number who receive this treatment and the costs associated with this service.
