Liver transplantation
The Liver Transplant Unit is based in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and has seen its waiting list increase over previous years due to acute and chronic liver dysfunction. Although the waiting list for liver transplants continues to grow, advancements in medical technology and improving techniques in this area have seen options for transplant increase.
The service not only transplants whole organs but also transplants split liver grafts allowing two recipients to benefit from transplant. Since 2008 the service has also offered live liver donation where a healthy living donor is able to donate half of their liver.
