Ophthalmic Oncology

Tumour of the eye are very rare, with only 35 – 40 cases of uveal melanoma in Scotland each year.

The single Scottish centre providing diagnosis, treatment and follow up is the Tennant Institute at Gartnavel General Hospital, Glasgow.  Primary treatment is brachytherapy by which a small plaque is attached to the outside surface of the eye and left in place for a few days to treat the tumour.  In a smaller number of cases the tumour – or the eye itself – may be surgically removed.

Around 10 – 12 patients each year are referred to Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology in Merseyside, where proton beam therapy is provided.
