Photobiology
The photobiology unit is a national referral centre based at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, and provides a diagnostic and management advice service for patients throughout Scotland who suffer from UV-associated skin disorders (photosensitivity).
Patients are referred to be examined by specialist dermatologists for the diagnosis of photosensitive dermatological conditions. Clinical management arising from the consultation and investigations and clinical advice for their continuing care are also provided. The service has been extended to include the investigation of the cutaneous porphyrias with a clinical advice service. Cutaneous porphyrias often cause photosensitivity, blisters, necrosis of the skin and gums, or itching and swelling. The service continues to strongly support the private members bill through parliament to produce a licensing environment for the regulation of sun bed use.
