Scottish Adult Congenital Cardiac Service
There is a growing population of adults in Scotland with congenital heart conditions; the Scottish Adult Congenital Cardiac Service (SACCS) provides a range of services for adults with this disease. During 2010-11, the national service has performed 111 surgical operations and 81 interventional cardiology cases.
A key part of this Service is the one-stop outpatient clinic, where patients are regularly assessed for signs of deterioration; enabling timely decisions to be made about invasive aspects of clinical care, i.e. surgery or interventional cardiology. Almost 2,000 patients were seen in the 179 clinics held in 2010-11.
The transfer of the service to the Golden Jubilee National Hospital is now complete, and NSD are working with the team to implement a clinical protocol which will be in place from April 2012. The protocol will aid and support the development of regional services.
This Service works closely with the teenage clinic at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow; providing a continuity of care from the paediatric to the adult service. The SACCS clinicians also provide support for pregnant women with congenital heart conditions.
