Scottish Organ Retrieval Team (SORT)

The organ retrieval team are a team of theatre staff and surgeons based in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and supported by the cardiac transplant surgeons based in Glasgow.  The team perform organ retrievals all over Scotland and more recently have been responsible for retrievals in the Northern Ireland.  Organ retrieval across the UK has recently been examined as part of a  review of Transplantation, undertaken by the Department of Health, which has recognised that the model used in Scotland is of best practice and is now to be replicated across the UK.  As a result of the review the commissioning of the team will transfer to NHS Blood and Transplant in 2010.
