Spinal Injuries Service
The Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit at the Southern General Hospital, Glasgow, is responsible for the management of all patients in Scotland who have a traumatic injury to the spinal cord.
It offers acute surgical management and both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation for young people and adults with a spinal injury. The unit comprises 12 high dependency beds, 30 rehabilitation beds and a 6-bedded respiratory care unit. There is also a fully-equipped gymnasium, hydrotherapy pool and Stepdown Unit. The Stepdown Unit allows patients, families and friends to spend time together during their admission and to experience independent living before going home.
In addition to the liaison nurse service, which supports people in their own homes after discharge from hospital, there are outreach follow-up clinics at Inverness, Musselburgh, Dumfries, the Borders, Arbroath and Aberdeen and Huntly.
The Scottish Centre for Innovation in Spinal Cord Injury (SCI2) is an umbrella to support translational research in a clinical setting and unit works in close partnership with them.
There were 472 new patients referred of which 148 were admitted and a further 324 where telephone advice was offered for the management of patients with non-neurological deficit.
