Transplant Co-ordination
The transplant services based within Scotland have seen an increase in donated organs and transplantation procedures. The co-ordination of transplants is a complex and lengthy process and is conducted by a team of national transplant co-ordinators who are based in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. Although transplant coordination is demanding and often difficult the end results can be life changing, providing patients with a high quality of life and better long term survival.
A review of the service was undertaken during 2006-2007 by Department of Health (DH) and at the start of 2007 the results of the review were released. As a result of the recommendations made by DoH, in future transplant coordination in Scotland will be commissioned by NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) as a UK national service. NSD are currently liaising with NHSBT to facilitate the transfer of the service.
